The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) could be postponed from “summer 2025” to January 2026.
According to Morocco’s DM Sport, the 2025 AFCON might be postponed but no exact reasons have been given to sustain this decision.
The tournament normally takes place every two years. However, playing it in June and July would mean a clash with FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup format to take place from June 15 to July 13 in North America.
The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has always explained that the reason for postponement is linked to climatic conditions which are not favourable in the summer.
Earlier in February this year, when asked if the competition would go ahead in 2025 as planned, CAF president Patrice Motsepe had refused to confirm the dates
“There are a lot of competing events at the same time but we are confident that…it is indeed going to be around that time,” Motsepe said.
Ivory Coast was to host the 2023 edition but was delayed by six months because of concerns over the rainy season in West Africa.
Meanwhile, CAF is yet to issue an official announcement on this new development
