Sisterspeak237 has embarked on putting smiles on the faces of some 35 children with disabilities in Nkambe, a town in the North West Region, and Yaounde, the capital city of Cameroon.
After observing that many children (especially those with disabilities) are still left behind several weeks after the start of the school year, the organization resorted to engaging in the operation.
According to Sisterpeak237’s findings, some parents of the children with disabilities are unable to pay some of the dues required even in primary schools where tuition is free.
“Over a month since classes resumed in Cameroon, we observed that certain parents are unable to register their children. Through our outreach program, some of these children received full or partial tuition fees and others obtained requisite school supplies“, says Rita Acha, Sisterspeak237’s inclusion lead.
“As an ardent proponent of SDG4, this initiative principally aims to improve access to education and quality of participation for children with disabilities within schools“, Rita went on.
The organization was able to identify children with disabilities in Nkambe, thanks to their collaboration with the Center For Disability Inclusive Development – CEDID. Consequently, they conducted an outreach in PS Nkambe New Town, GPS Group 1, AGAPAE, G.S Kumsa, IGBPS Nkambe, and CS Binshua.
In Nkambe, Sisterspeak is supporting the education of 20 girls most of whom are with disabilities. They are taking care of the fees registration and the purchase of uniforms and supplies for some of the kids.
In Yaounde, Sisterspeak237’s operation to support children with disabilities also started this week and will continue till the end of the week.
Sisterspeak237 is an organization that amplifies the voices of women and minority groups in Cameroon. The organization trains and equips mostly women with the skills and tools needed to tell their stories and be more visible.
