Hansi Flick has been sacked as head coach of Germany’s national team nine months before Euro 2024.
The former Bayern Munich manager had an unsuccessful stint in charge of the national team with a 4-1 loss to Japan appearing to be the final straw.
The announcement of his dismissal was made public by the President of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendorf after a meeting with shareholders.
“The committees agreed that the Men’s Senior National Team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country”, the statement read.
The Die Mannschaft have lost four of their last five games and recorded just 12 wins in 25 games under the 58-year-old who replaced Joachim Löw in August 2021.
Rudi Voller will handle the team as caretaker coach. Hansi Flick becomes the first head coach to be dismissed since the post was created.
Germany hosts World Cup finalists France on Tuesday, September 12 at Borussia Dortmund’ Signal Iduna Park.
It is left to see who succeeds Flick, with Julian Nagelsmann appearing to be the favorite option.
