The National Cathedral of Ghana is a planned interdenominational Christian cathedral currently being built in Accra, Ghana’s capital.
The $400m state-funded church is Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo’s election promise to God. “I will help build a cathedral to his glory and honour,” he said in 2020.
According to Aljazeera reports months ago, the project had almost been abandoned due to inadequate resources though with over $58m planted at the site already.
The interdenominational national cathedral is intended to help unify the Christian community and expose replicas of reverenced christian and traditional symbols. It is hoped to help promote national unity and social cohesion while attracting pilgrims and tourists. It includes a built-in economic engine for financial sustainability.
Going by Ghana’s finance minister, Ken Ofori Atta the project will bring about a “spiritual emancipation”. This has however met criticism from some church leaders in the near 2/3 Christian populated nation and opposition front who call it a misplacement of priority.
Formal religious activities of Ghana, like state funerals and presidential inaugural services will take place in the cathedral.
