Burkina Faso overpowered Mauritania to secure a 1-0 win at the Bouaké stadium
The Stallions owed their win to a penalty beautifully converted by captain Bertrand Traore in the 96th minute.
Mauritania had hed thier grounds until the 90, but one mistake in the penalty box spoiled thier whole show which turned into a stoppage time nightmare.
Bertrand Traore stepped up, converted the penalty, and gave the Stallions all 3 points to top Group D.
It is the first ever win for the Burkinabe in their opening match of the continental showpiece
With the win, Burkina Faso head the pool with three points after the first round of games, Algeria were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by Angola on Monday which keeps them second with 1 point, Angola with a point and Mauritania seats bottom with 0 points.
Burkina Faso have now scored in each of their last 15 AFCON games, the most consistent active streak and second longest in the history of the tournament behind Egypt who found the net in 27 consecutive matches between 1957 and 1980.
Algeria faces Burkina Faso next while Angola takes on Mauritania on January 20.
