The Yaounde City Council has embarked on a campaign to impound motorbikes whose owners continue to defy laid down rules for their operation. The operation kicked off this morning following a final warning issued yesterday.
Luc Messi Atangana, Mayor of the Yaoundé City Council and the Senior Divisional Officer of Mfoundi, Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent met with syndicate leaders and heads of security units, giving a final warning.
“From tomorrow June 8th, all commercial motorbikes found in restricted zones will be impounded,” the Mayor said.
The repressive measures, the official explained, come after multiple efforts to get bike riders comply with laid down regulations as well as void zones from their they are restricted.
Hear him; “We have again made a call for cooperation, for them to respect laid down texts restricting circulation from certain zones, for respect of the Highway Code and that they should restrain from uncivil acts”.
In the same light, the Mfoundi SDO, Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent reiterated the warning, adding that sensitisation will now go hand in hand with repressive measures against defaulters.
He said: “We have seen that for a long time now urban disorder has resumed. Today we called on every stakeholder to sensitise them. We don’t need to see commercial motorbikes in some parts of town. We call on them to respect what the law says.”
