The Regional Delegation of Public Health for the South West Region has offered training to media stakeholders in the region on the upcoming polio round one vaccination.
The informative gathering at the premises of the SW Regional delegation of Public Health brought journalist from newspaper, radio, television and for the first time, the new media to aid the awareness campaign on the benefits of the vaccination.
This first round of the polio vaccination campaign will run from Friday September 22 to Sunday 24 throughout the South West and 5 other regions in a bit to combat newfound circulating strains of the virus.
The campaign targets infants of 0- 59 months (5years) and is a prevention against poliomyelitis which has no cure. Going by the chief of communication for the expanded programme South West, Mukuele Cynthia the strategies are trifold.
With the “fixed strategy, vaccination teams will be stationed at health services. For the Mobile strategy, we will have community health workers and vaccination teams working door to door to sensitize and vaccinate. With temporarily fixed, we will have teams fixed at bus stations, schools and churches.”
Polio was kicked out of Cameroon, but in recent times, a type 2 case was found in the Centre Region of Cameroon as reported by health authorities. In severe cases, it could result to irreversible paralysis. From the 20-21 of September, teams will do social mobilisation ahead of the vaccination campaign.
So, “it is important for parents to allow their children take the vaccine.”
