Rigobert Song’s contract as coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon has ended
A communiqué signed by Cameroon’s minister of Sports and Physical education, Professor Narcisse Mouelle Kombi on Wednesday, February 28 confirmed Song’s two-year contract signed in February 2022 will not be renewed.
According to some multiple reports within, Rigobert Song won’t have another tenure as head coach of the Indomitable Lions due to poor results.
Appointed as gaffer in February 2022, Song led the Indomitable Lions to secure a dramatic play-off win over Algeria to qualify for the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup.
But five-time African champions Cameroon recorded their only victory over Brazil in their final group game of the world and were dumped out in the group stage
Cameroon was booted out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the round of 16 in January by runners-up Nigeria.
“We have not achieved our objectives, and our executive committee and I do not see ourselves renewing the contract (with Song),” Eto’o told France 24.
“Song brought a lot to this team,” added Eto’o. “Now we have to think about the future, ” Eto’o added.
The Former Indomitable Lions captain who replaced Portuguese born Tony Conceição sealed six wins, eight draws and nine defeats in 23 matches as head coach of the Cameroon national team.
The 47 year-old has been heavily criticized for his mediocre statistics with the Indomitable Lions as well as a poor coaching form at national level that led to his appointment.
Inside sources have it that the government of Cameroon is poised to set up a committee to recruit a new gaffer before the March FIFA transfer window shutsdown.
