Some private media institutions in Cameroon will benefit from the sum of 119 million CFA this 2023 as government support.
The increase was revealed by the Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, Rene Emmanuel Sadi during the 5th Ordinary Session of the National Commission for the Scrutiny of Applications for State Institutional Support to Private Media.
The Commission will have to examine files of both traditional and new media platforms. With a total of 71, that is: 6 blogs and 65 newspapers.
The Publisher of daily tabloid The Guardian Post who doubles as the President of the Cameroon English Newspaper Publishers’ Association, CENPA, has saluted the increase but says more should be done. He said, “we thank government for the increase which is yet to meet standard.”
The gift comes a month after over thirty publishers, members of the The Cameroon English Newspaper Publishers’ Association, CENPA, called for the creation of a special fund to support English newspapers.
The Commission will have to ensure that those to benefit from this amount are in line with the law.
This including being registered at the National Social Insurance Fund, pay taxes, have professionals that are recognised and ensure the strict respect of the ethics and deontology of the corp.
