Cameroonian born Journalism scholar and tutor, Professor Kingsley Lyonga-La Ngange has been awarded the Fulbright scholarship for a research programme at the University of Florida in the United States of America.
The nine months programme is expected to run till August 2024.
During the training, the Fulbright scholar will seek to develop laws which could be used to foster development in Cameroon.
As a Journalism trainer for over two decades at the department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) in the University of Buea (UB) Prof Kingsley Ngange pointed that “information is the stock and trade of journalists, and they need to have a good quantity and good quality of information”highlighting that “ a better-informed population will perform better democratic functions.”
The Professor who is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor Incharge of Research, Cooperation and Relations with the Business World (DVC/RCB) at the University of Buea says he seeks to strike a balance in his findings, promoting press rights and ethical journalism as he robs minds with intellectuals like Professor David Cuillier, director of the Brechner FOI Project.
With re-occurrent moves on press rights over the years resulting to the death and detention of many newsmen, Prof. Kingsley however thinks there is a place for improvement against this back drop. Obtaining a scholarship in the U.S. government program for the exchange of U.S. and foreign scholars and teachers, he hopes to contribute significantly.
