Officials of the Expanded Vaccination Program, EPI have said that an anti-malarial vaccine will be introduced in Cameroon in 2024.
According to the World Health Organization, the first phase of the vaccine is mainly for children aged from 6 to 24 months and living in areas at high risk of malaria in the country.
Health officials said this face will benefit 41 health districts in areas most exposed to malaria.
They further specified that 249,133 doses of “RTS, S” developed by the British laboratory Gsk with a total cost estimated at 233 US dollars are financed partly by the State and partly by international partners.
The introduction of this vaccine in Cameroon is expected to reduce the burden of malaria by approximately 70%.
The Ministry of Health says 2,481 people died of malaria in Cameroon in 2022. 71% of them were under the age of 5 compared to 2021 when 3,782 people died.
