The African Union has asked that an investigation be opened following the death of 23 migrants in an attempt to cross into Spain from Morocco.
The incident happened last Friday at the border after about 2000 migrants tried getting into Spain from Morocco.
Moroccan authorities revealed that 140 police officers were hurt in the “stampede” as migrants tried to climb a metal border fence.
The AU chairperson said it was essential to have “an immediate investigation… and remind all countries of their obligations under international law to treat all migrants with dignity and to prioritize their safety and human rights, while refraining from the use of excessive force.”
The gory incident happens on the eve of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations set to commence on Saturday July 2nd.
