The Yaoundé IV sporting team has again exerted its dominance, emerging winners of the 2022 Festi Foot Y’ongola holiday competition. They thrashed Yaoundé VI 5-0 during the finals held at the GP Melen Sports Complex, Sunday August 28, 2022.
The second consecutive victory saw them receive two trophies; the championship trophy and a 1 million FCFA cash prize, as well as the cup trophy and an accompanying 1.5 million FCFA envelope.
Addressing the media at the end of the tournament, the Yaoundé City Mayor, Luc Messi Atangana said it was a wonderful initiative, and the organising team had given it the attention it deserved. Future editions, he went on, will be laced with more innovative ideas to ensure inclusion.
“I have taken note of suggestions made and another edition will be organised next year. We will integrate new disciplines and I encourage the youths to practice the different sporting disciplines they love. We understand today that sports is a vital part of our country…” he remarked.
Festi Foot Y’ongola
In the just-ended second edition of the Festi Foot Y’ongola football competition, seven teams, one from each subdivision in Yaoundé, competed in the football category. Held for two months, the competition had as primary goal, preventing youth delinquency during the long holidays.
“The City Mayor is using this as an opportunity to sensitise the youths. Mfoundi is the showcase of our country and whatever happens there affects the country. This tournament permits us to keep them occupied and prevent them from engaging in ills like drugs and having unwanted pregnancies…” the 4th deputy Mayor of the Yaoundé City Council, Kwayeb Ghislain had explained.
