Paul Biya, 91, the President of the Republic of Cameroon has in his traditional youth day address, February 10, 2024 reassured the youths of the government’s commitment to their welfare, while enumerating government achievements so far.
Speaking for the 58th edition of the youth day under the theme, “Youth, Import Substitution and Economic Patriotism for Cameroon’s Development.” In appreciation for the strides of Cameroon’s international marshal artist, Francis Ngannou, the Head of State saluted how he “marvelled the whole world”.
In the 15 minutes long address, Paul Biya said the state of Cameroon recruits a significant number of young person into the civil service yearly. He however, encouraged the zeal for self employment and entrepreneurship. The Special Three Year Youth Plan launched in 2016 he disclosed, has already funded
thousands of youth-focused projects.
Similarly, observed that the Entrepreneurship Promotion Programme contributed to the establishment of over 12000 new businesses in 2023, creating nearly 22000 direct jobs.
President Paul Biya, announced of firm instructions to government to maintain gas prices though the recent increase of fuel prices in a bit avert shortage from what he termed “current budget constraints”. Attaching very much importance to education, inorder to build the youths he said he has ordered the creation of Competitive Skill Mechanism. And the Reduction of vocational school fees from 500 thousand to 50 thousand.
Lamenting the early elimination of the Indomitable Lions from the African Cup Of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire, Paul Biya remained optimistic, “we will keep up the fight, and we will win again.”
Noting the increase trend in emigration, he advised the youths to remain patriotic and committed to building Cameroon.
“Leaving is not always the solution. Emigrate? Yes, but not at all costs. Moreover, you should know that while you yearn to leave, many foreigners are trying to settle in Cameroon, thereby confirming that ours is a hospitable country and a land of opportunities.” Said Paul Biya.
With dissatisfaction, Paul Biya highlighted decay, irresponsible and deviant behaviour, violence, indiscipline, alcohol and drug abuse and intolerance to be on the rise in the society. To this, he prescribed hard work, integrity, patriotism, tolerance, civic mindedness, compliance with the law and
respect of the common good. These, while calling on parents not to relent in mentoring the youths.
