AFCON 2023: Cape Verd beats Mauritania to seal quarter finals spot
Ryan Mendes scored a late penalty for Cape Verde to inspire thier journey to the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations after beating last-16 opponents Mauritania 1-0.
Cape Verde finished top of Group B unbeaten ahead of Egypt and Ghana who were considered favourites to win the AFCON.
Mauritania reached the competition’s knockout stage for the first time as one of the best third-placed teams after defeating two-time winners Algeria 1-0 in their final group game.
This year’s AFCON was Mauritania’s best run in the competition since thier first ever AFCON qualification for the in 2019The Blue Sharks of Cape Verde, who reached the quarterfinals in 2013, will play either Morocco or South Africa.
